Life was cramped for a young man living with 3 others in the master bedroom of a double-wide trailer in Donnellson, IL but that's where we find a teenager by the name of Nathanial Lee Hall at the age of 16. The head of the house had recently lost yet another construction job leaving the rest of them scrambling to pick up the pieces.
"Between his constant drinking, belittling and abuse lot of people that knew me at that time probably thought I was crazy for sticking around but I felt like leaving would be giving the rest of his victims a death sentence. Music seemed like the only escape.. That's why I picked up the guitar.. as a ray of hope."
The guitar would take Lucky One Lane to new heights of self expression and discovery. While in High School he formed a rock cover band and named the project 5 our of 4. They would go on to play homecoming and several other small events including a Relay for Life event: Rock Against Cancer.
"The drummer and I were sitting around and trying to figure out a band name and of course nothing sounded good. That's when I looked down at my T-shirt.. 5 out of 4 people have a problem with fractions is what the shirt read. We both laughed so hard like a couple of dorky kids."
After high school Lucky One Lane went to work recording singles at home and performing with various bands near the St. Louis area such as Tin Can Stilts, Psycho Folk, members of the Stifftones, Clusterpluck, The Wolf Pack and eventually forming The Pop Atrocities with other St. Louis musicians. These efforts would result in only a limited number of recordings but set in stone Lucky One Lanes determination to follow his muse.
Troubled waters led Lane into several failed relationships, drug addiction and threatened to snuff out his inspiration for good.
"I spent my whole life writing music in my mind that no-one could hear.. I didn't think anyone wanted to hear it.. I had a lot of issues with my self esteem and I really think that's why I wound up in so many heartbreaking relationships with horrible monsters and why I don't speak to those I used to hold dear. I've really come to the conclusion that in order to move on with your life you have to do just that and move on.. Sometimes you're closing certain chapters because you have no other choice if you want to become your true self and fulfill your potential. "
